WE'RE STILL HERE! 2024 - Second Place

Life is Good
As a child polio survivor with a long leg brace growing up in the ‘50s and ‘60s, I found that playgrounds were not very accessible. I mostly enjoyed swinging because that's about all I could do. Slides were not accessible, and merry-go-rounds were dangerous. Many times, sand and mud on the playground presented a challenge.
By the time I had grown up, gotten married and had my own children, improvements had been made. But still, the use of mulch on the ground, and those short barriers to keep it in, proved to be great for kids but not so much for someone using a scooter. I was forced to watch from the side.
Now I live with my daughter and her family. Playgrounds have been made more accessible! Most barriers have been removed. There are merry-go-rounds and swings that can be accessed with wheelchairs. Most of all, the rubber mats on the ground are great for me to roll on. Another improvement is my new power chair that can rise up to allow me to actually help and interact with my grandkids on the swings, monkey bars and climbing equipment!
Life is good, and "We're Still Here!"
