The health hazards of smoking, ranging from cancer to colds, stomach ulcers, amputations, hip fractures, and even back pain, plus increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, are well known. The benefits of quitting are substantial. Smoking is a significant health risk for anyone with respiratory insufficiency (see Underventilation) and/or a history of respiratory involvement by polio and should be avoided. Smoking produces mucus and increased secretions that need to be mobilized, putting an extra demand on already weakened expiratory muscles (see Cough Production).
Nearly all states now have free programs to help people quit smoking. You can learn more at www.smokefree.gov or 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669).
